BYOC (Bring Your Own Charger): FBI Warns Against Public Phone Charging Stations
Few things in life are worse than running out of battery power on your phone when you are away from your charger. The FBI has issued a warning against using the public phone charging stations, like the ones you might see in airports, hotels, and shopping centers.
Accoording to CNBC, the FBI says that criminals have figured out how to use public USB ports to “introduce malware and monitoring software onto devices.” Well, that’s concerning.
In other words, if you’re in a pinch and plug your phone into one of these public charging stations, you could be connecting your phone to bad stuff including malware that would allow the “bad guys” to hack into your device.
There is a simple solution to this problem though. Just bring your full charging cable WITH the brick that plugs into the wall. Criminals cannot hack into an electrical outlet plug. The only problem is when you stick your cable directly into a public USB port.
The FBI didn’t cite any specific locations or cases where sort of thing has happened. It is just being called a general advisory. Just be safe when you travel.
Plug your phone into an outlet and not the USB plug at the phone charging stations.
