Nashville Hosts Southwest Florida Fundraiser

The entire country felt the impact of Hurricane Ian. In fact, some local residents who were out of the state during Ian, could only watch the news and hear stories of what was actually happening in Florida. 26 year old Sheena Brook, a Fort Myers resident, was at a neighbors house during the storm, where she watched her house, along with everything in it,  be swept away by Ian’s huge storm surge. Her family lost everything. She may sound familiar to some of you who might have seen her perform on The Voice. Brian Sutherland who has performed at Ft Myers Beach, Captiva Island and other local venues, carries close ties to Island Hopper organizers, and wanted to do something to help. A Southwest Florida fundraiser.

Organizers reached out to Brook, many many others who have performed here as well, like Danny Myrick, Aaron Barker, Maggie Rose, Sutherland, Brook and many others will be performing Wed Nov 2nd, and the funds raised will be donated to The Collaborators SWFL Relief Fund . The event is called Songwriters for Southwest Florida.

There will also be an online auction to raise funds. Some of the items belong to world famous country stars like Crystal Gayle, Lonestar, Luke Bryan, and many other artists as well.

Sutherland mentions that, “He would be more than happy to and was glad to help.”

Fort Myers Beach is absolutely destroyed. Our entire Southwest Florida area is reeling from Hurricane Ian. Most of us are without power and internet. We have limited cell and text messaging available. Many of you reading this are from outside of our area, so if can help:

Hurricane Ian made landfall near Cayo Costa, an island off the coast of Fort Myers, just after 3 p.m. on Wednesday. With Ian, came 150 mph winds, the fifth-strongest hurricane to make landfall in the U.S. According to ABC News, “Ian then made a second landfall 90 minutes later, still as a Category 4 storm with 145 mph winds, just south of Punta Gorda, near Pirate Harbor.”

While the efforts to restore Fort Myers Beach will be a years long recovery, our whole area is suffering greatly. The causeway to Sanibel collapsed and the docks sustained heavy damage, making the island only accessible by helicopter. There’s some areas where we don’t even know yet the extent of the damage.

We will rebuild. But this is going to take a long time.
