New Arch On Fort Myers Beach Will Have Pieces Of It’s Original Arch
Fort Myers Beach has quite a history. And no, I’m not talking about drunk spring breakers at the Lanai Kai or the high abundance of Karen’s at the Diamond Head. I’m talking about historic buildings and structures that have defined Fort Myers Beach before the commercialization of the area.
One of these structures would welcome you as soon as you entered the island. Where the Sky Bridge now is, a large arch stood.
Constructed in 1924 and demolished in 1979, it became the symbol of Fort Myers Beach. It was often a meeting spot for teenagers and beachgoers of all types. The demolition was controversial but was necessary to make way for the new bridge.
Rob Williams’ grandfather was a builder on Fort Myers Beach and actually purchased the demolished pieces of the arch in an auction. They have sat on a farm in Buckingham ever since.
But now the stones will serve a purpose again.
A new arch is set to be constructed in Bowditch Regional Park and Williams was more than happy to donate the old stones to join the new. And you can actually donate a brick and have your name inscribed upon it.
Williams said that he will donate one and inscribe the name of his Grandparents.
