Did You Know Monkeys Are In South Florida? Where Did They Come From?

Now this is certainly news to me and I’m sure it is news to most, but there is actually a colony of monkies that have lived and thrived in South Florida for the past 70 years.
Researchers have at Florida Atlantic University have concluded that the colony, which consists of around 41 primates in a mangrove swamp near Dania Beach, originated from a Chimpanzee farm in 1948.
There was an escape during that year. Most were recaptured but a lot escaped to the safety of the swamp.
The Dania Beach community has grown to love these little rascals though and are even organizing efforts to raise money and purchase the land as a sanctuary for them.
I don’t know about you but I’m getting some Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes vibes…
