You’ll Flush $11,198 Worth of Toilet Paper in Your Lifetime
COBAR, AUSTRALIA - APRIL 17: James Degn, owner of J&K Butchery holds up a shop special, brains with a roll of toilet paper on April 17, 2020 in Cobar Australia. Degn packaged the special as a tongue-in-cheek approach to the toilet paper shortage in supermarkets world wide due to the Coronavirus pandemic. For Australians who live in the bush and hundreds of kilometres away from the nearest supermarket, it is normal to only travel into town for groceries and essential supplies once a month, but with limited supplies and purchasing restrictions due COVID-19, residents from remote and rural communities in NSW are struggling to stock up as they normally would. Residents of Louth must travel either a 200km roundtrip to Bourke or 260km roundtrip to Cobar in order to buy groceries and necessities, making regular trips to the supermarket not viable. In Cobar there are two supermarkets to feed 3500 residents. While deliveries are still in place to outback town of Cobar, 50 percent of stock ordered cannot be filled due to limited supplies. While some exemptions to purchasing limits have been made for those who live in remote areas, some also worry about the social stigma of being seen filling their shopping trolleys while the government warns Australians not to panic buy and hoard products. A study found the average American will go through $11,198 worth of toilet paper in their lifetime. Which is just over $180 a year.
Spending has almost doubled since the pandemic started though. Because we’ve all stocked up and used more while stuck at home.
Here are three more quick stats from the survey . . .
1. The average household goes through 159 rolls of toilet paper a year, and 145 rolls of paper towels.
2. Over the course of your life, you’ll spend $10,519 on paper towels . . . $9,454 on tissues . . . and go through $9,403 worth of plastic bags and garbage bags.
3. Bidets are more popular than they used to be in the U.S. And 42% of people who don’t have one now say they’d consider it.
