Looking for a cheap house in a no-so cheap market? It’s a challenge to find the cheapest house, since prices just keep climbing.  Anne Erickson in Detroit tipped me on to their housing market. I could sell my house in Estero and buy a whole block in Detroit. But then I’d have to live in Detroit. Ever been to Detroit?

That said, there are still some other cities in America where it’s fairly inexpensive to snag that first home. Including one major city in Florida. And I’ll even bring the proof to back it up.

    Detroit’s median home price is $32,600.

  • 2. Buffalo, NY

    The median home price is $51,000.

  • 3. Toledo, OH

    The average home price is $51,200.

  • 4. Cleveland, OH

    The median price of a home is just under $50,000.

  • 5. Tampa, FL

    The median price of a home is $120,000. Now, this may be skewed because there are a LOT of low end spots in Tampa. My car costs more than some of these.

  • 6. Augusta, GA

    The median price of a home is $74,600. That’s where they play the Masters. It might be cheaper to buy a house than rent a hotel for the week. 

  • 7. Philadelphia, PA

    The median price for a home in Philly is around $104,000, but other factors make some homes much less expensive in the area.

  • 8. Youngstown, OH

    The median price of a home is less than $40,000.

  • 9. Akron, OH

    The median price of a home is $55,600. Apparently the “Birthplace of LeBron James” sign hasn’t helped property values. 

  • 10. Lynchburg, VA

    The cost of living is 11.4% below the U.S average.

  • 11. Temple, TX

    The cost of living is right under 12.3% below the U.S. average.

  • 12. Morristown, TN

    Rent and mortgage prices are about 30% lower than the national average.

  • 13. Wichita Falls, TX

    The cost of living is 13.2 below the U.S. average.

  • 14. Hattiesburg, MS

    The cost of living is 13.4% is below the U.S. average.

  • 15. Fayetteville, AK

    The cost of living is 16.9% below the U.S. average.
