Bishop Verot Coach Matt Herting Gets 500th Career Win
On Jan. 11, 2025, Bishop Verot’s Matt Herting grabbed his 500th win against Monsignor Pace.
Nearly three decades of hard work led to this achievement. After beginning at Marine Military Academy in Texas, Herting devoted 26 years to building a winning program at the Fort Myers school.
Kansas’ Bill Self and Ole Miss’ Chris Beard sent video messages to celebrate the moment. These coaching giants wanted to join in the celebration.
Talk to his players, and they’ll share stories about more than just basketball. His influence goes beyond the court — teaching real-world lessons and building character through sports.
This remarkable achievement puts him in rare company. “Five hundred is a lot of coaching years. To go out there and win for him was big for us,” senior Gavin Williams told NBC2.
Senior Tony Cedeno notes how Herting makes every practice worthwhile. “Always just a fun coach, fun to be around. And it’s pretty exciting to see a good guy like that get such a good accomplishment. It was really cool to see how excited everyone was for him. I mean, it’s really hard to get 500. It’s so cool. We always have a lot of respect for him.”
Bishop Verot will face Gateway Charter in their next game on Jan. 16, 2025.
