Chris Pratt Discusses His Religious Beliefs, Responds To Criticism
Chris Pratt attends the press conference for "Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol.3" at the Conrad Hotel on April 18, 2023 in Seoul, South Korea.
Chris Pratt doesn’t worry about the haters as long as he’s got his faith. The Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 star has been outspoken about his faith and that he’s used to the criticism. Pratt, 43, told Page Six on Monday (May 8) at a Cinema Society screening of Vol. 3 that it’s “nothing new.”
The Super Mario Bros. Movie voice actor reiterated his point by quoting Biblical scripture. “If I was of this world, they would love me just like that but as it is, I’ve chosen out of this world. That’s John 15:18 through 20,” he shared. “That’s the way it is, nothing new, 2,000 years ago they hated him, too,” he added, referencing Jesus Christ.
Pratt faced backlash after he was believed to belong to Hillsong Church, an allegedly anti-LGBT+ megachurch. He addressed the rumors last year, telling Men’s Health that he’d “never actually been” to the controversial Los Angeles establishment. Elsewhere in the interview, Pratt stated, “Religion has been oppressive as f— for a long time. I didn’t know that I would kind of become the face of religion when really I’m not a religious person.” He added, “The evil that’s in the heart of every single man has glommed on to the back of religion and come along for the ride.”
As we previously reported, Pratt met his wife, Katherine Schwarzenegger, in 2018 at church. While appearing on The Drew Barrymore Show in April, he told the host he was “really struggling and felt really broken” right before he met Schwarzenegger. He added, “God has a fast-forward button, you know. When it’s right — boom! — you’re hit. You fall in love, you get married. Now we have two beautiful daughters to add to my family, and it feels really great.”
He then shared that his own journey in “finding a higher power and leaning on that” saved him. “And then shortly later, meeting the woman of my dreams,” he recalled. “It’s all about timing. There’s a perfect plan out there for you. You just have to have faith. If you have faith, it falls into place.” Though they didn’t start dating right away, Pratt snuck “some glances “and wondered, “‘Who is that? Anyway, what am I doing? Come on, I’m broken, help me! But who’s that?’” The Marvel star added that their connection was “very quick.” Comparing their fit for each other to a puzzle, Pratt says Katherine’s “piece” was made to fit his “puzzle.”

Announcing their engagement in 2029, Pratt wrote on Instagram: “Sweet Katherine, so happy you said yes! I’m thrilled to be marrying you. Proud to live boldly in faith with you. Here we go.” They married that same year and later welcomed two daughters together: Lyla, 2, and Eloise, 11 months. Pratt is also dad to son Jack, 10, with his former wife, Anna Faris.
'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3' Review: Their Wild, Final Farewell
In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, our beloved band of misfits are settling into life on Knowhere. But it isn’t long before their lives are upended by the echoes of Rocket’s turbulent past. Peter Quill (Chris Pratt), still reeling from the loss of Gamora (Zoe Saldaña). She was, of course, killed (for good) in 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War. But in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, an identical but different Gamora entered our timeline. Quill met her long enough for her to knee him in the junk, and then she took off for parts unknown. We saw that he was depressed over the situation in last year’s Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. But now, must rally his team around him on a dangerous mission to save Rocket’s life—a mission that, if not completed successfully, could quite possibly lead to the end of the Guardians as we know them.
The film also sees the return of Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista), Nebul (Karen Gillan), Mantis (Pom Klementieff), Kraglin (Sean Gunn), and Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel) and Rocket (voiced by Bradley Cooper). Sylvester Stallone returns as Stakar Ogord and and Maria Bakalova returns to voice Cosmo the Spacedog and Elizabeth Debicki is back as Ayesha. New case members include Chukwudi Iwuji (High Evolutionary), Will Poulter (Adam Warlock), Nico Santos (Theel), Nathan Fillion (Master Karja) , Linda Cardinelli (Lylla the Otter) are also in the cast.
Director James Gunn tweeted a photo with the main cast and offered some words ahead of the world premiere last week. He wrote: “I’m nervous, of course, but mostly excited for all of us, the cast & crew & our friends & families, to sit together in a dark theater & experience the movie together. This is the sweetest part of filmmaking: one last look at our creation, one brief moment of being present to the long & winding journey it took us to get here, before turning it over to all of you, the world at large. Thank you to all of you who helped us to get here. You know who you are. My love for you runs deep. #GotGVol3 #WeAreGroot” Gunn has always said that he sees the franchise as a trilogy. And this is last Marvel project for the foreseeable future, as he is now heading rival DC Studios.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is in theaters now.
