Marija Visited Koreshan State Park
I can’t believe I’ve lived in SWFL now for over 3 years and hadn’t visited Koreshan State Park, but that all changed this weekend.
Koreshan State Park is right on S Tamiami Trail in Estero and is a place I drive by regularly, but never went in to explore. When it comes to cults (and serial killers), my interest peaks and when I found out that one of the earliest cults in the U.S. set up shop right here in Estero, I had to check it out.
The history is that Cyrus Teed brought his followers from Chicago to Estero in 1894 to build the “New Jerusalem” for his new religion, Koreshanity. The Koreshan Unity believed that the entire universe existed within a giant, hollow sphere, and here they built and operated their own community until 1961.
There’s guided tours available, but I just went with my dog Rocket and walked around reading the signs and it was really cool to be able to look inside buildings from the 1800’s.
There’s also biking, hiking, boating, camping and other things you would find in state park, but the Koreshan Settlement is what I went for.
