Tessa Thompson Discusses Being Marvel’s First LGBTQ Hero
Speaking to AP at the Thor: Love and Thunder Hollywood premiere, Tessa Thompson said about her reprised role of Valkyrie, “You know, the truth is, there’s so much queer representation in the comics. There’s a lot of characters in the canon that are queer and bisexual. I think that the best thing is for all of those images to be normalized — that it doesn’t actually need to be a big topic of conversation. It doesn’t have to be something we congratulate me, or anyone here at Marvel because it just is status quo!”
“That’s what Marvel is ushering this world into now,” the actress concluded.

Tessa Thompson has clarified why Valkyrie is specifically known as the “king” of New Asgard in the new movie. Thor (Chris Hemsworth) delegated the role of New Asgard’s leader to Valkyrie at the end of Avengers: Endgame, as the Asgardian decided to join the Guardians of the Galaxy instead of staying to rule over his people.
Per Total Film, Thompson, 38, clarified how it all stems from Thor originally being set to rule New Asgard before giving the job to Valkyrie instead, stating that they “just didn’t bother to change the title.”
“She’s a kind king. I know there’s been some confusion on the internet in terms of the gendering with her being king. The truth is, that’s the job that Thor was going to do, and then he just gave her the job, and we just didn’t bother to change the title, because the title is ‘king’, and she’s like, ‘Well, I can be king.’ The suits that she wears – we thought it was sort of a fun nod to Frida Kahlo.”
Thor: Love and Thunder is set to release on July 8.
