Surprise! There’s Drama Around The Smashing Pumpkins Reunion!
Oh boy…this Smashing Pumpkins reunion is not getting off to the best start.
D’arcy Wretzky sent Alternative Nation screenshots of texts with Billy Corgan in which she was told that only Corgan and Jimmy Chamberlin were working on new music in the studio with Rick Rubin. However, Corgan would later share a photo on Instagram showing himself, Chamberlin and James Iha in the studio together leading to the assumption that Wretzky wasn’t invited.
These texts also reveal that Wretzky was offered a reduced roll in a reunion tour a la Steven Adler in the recent Guns N’ Roses tour due to some shoulder issues Wretzky has been having. In these texts, Wretzky said her issues did not have to require surgery and that she would be healed in 4-6 weeks. Despite that, Corgan expressed some doubts in Wretzky’s ability to perform live by texting, “Show will be timed to minute and will run same set list every night due to production concerns, massive setlist, and need to be A level Broadway type show. We have to prove to world we can compete at highest level or tour we’ll [sic] never get out of America.”
After these texts went viral, a Smashing Pumpkins spokesperson released the following statement:
“In reuniting The Smashing Pumpkins, the band’s dedication remains to its fans and its music. To that, James Iha, Jimmy Chamberlin, and William Corgan haven’t played a show with D’arcy Wretzky for over 18 years. But it’s not for a lack of trying. For despite reports, Ms. Wretzky has repeatedly been invited out to play with the group, participate in demo sessions, or at the very least, meet face-to-face, and in each and every instance she always deferred. We wish her all the best, and look forward to reconnecting with you all very soon.”
Smashing Pumpkins big announcement is set to come this Thursday, February 15. Call it a hunch, but don’t be shocked if there are more developments before then.
