Florida Man Facing DUI Charges After Operating An Excavator
A Florida Man is facing DUI charges after reportedly operating an excavator while intoxicated. DUIs don’t only happen while driving cars!
In some states, you can get a DUI on a bike, a tractor, and now we’re learning you can also get one for operating an excavator while intoxicated. The incident happened in Flagler County. Thankfully, it sounds like nobody was injured during the ride.
Man Facing DUI Charges For Operating An Excavator
You’re always warned not to operate heavy machinery while intoxicated or on certain medications. It can be incredibly dangerous, not only for you but for anyone you come across! A car would be challenging enough to operate while intoxicated, I can’t imagine having to work an excavator. You’d have to think it would be difficult and it can definitely cause a lot more damage.
According to Click Orlando, Flagler County Sheriff’s Office deputies were called to a scrap yard in Bunnell after being informed about a verbal altercation and threats being made by a man operating heavy machinery. When law enforcement arrived to the scene, they noticed 62-year-old John Kastner operating an excavator “while his normal faculties were impaired.” Kastner was arrested for DUI and no other information was released.
Flagler County Sheriff’s Office took to X (formerly Twitter) to release a statement saying in part, “If you’re drunk you shouldn’t be behind the wheel…or levers!” The post also included a video taken at the scene. It looks chaotic. Check out their post and accompanying video below.
He definitely sounds drunk in the video! Before being put in handcuffs, he requests to be able to go and turn the machine off, but it appears someone else will have to do that. Definitely not the best activity for you to do while intoxicated. He appears sleepy in the video, and the officers point that out and even say he might have been sleeping at one point. At the end of the video, he calls out to someone (either “Gabe” or “Babe”) to let them know what’s happening and that he’s being taken to jail.
An excavator isn’t the weirdest thing someone has gotten a DUI on, though. There have been people arrested for DUI on a Zamboni, lawn mower, a wheelchair, an inflatable raft, and more, per Cracked. There was also a guy in the United Kingdom who got a DUI while operating a pink Barbie car, per McAleer Law. There have also been stories of people getting DUIs on a horse or on a horse and buggy! So, compared to all of these an excavator doesn’t seem that strange.

While committing crimes may seem black and white (you either broke the law or you didn’t), there are certainly some crimes that are dumber than others. Crimes can happen anywhere, anytime, to anyone. However, it takes a very unique individual, a case study if you will, to commit some of these outrageously dumb crimes. Today, I’m not sure if those shows are around…and I’m certain Spike TV isn’t around anymore. That’s a story for another time.

Crimes can happen for a number of reasons. They may happen out of necessity. They could also happen on accident. These crimes, however, do not fall into those categories. These crimes are different. None of these would accidentally happen. They also aren’t a matter of life or death. There’s no ethics quiz here, or any matters of ‘would you steal bread to support your family?’ These crimes, and criminals, aren’t straight up cringeworthy.
While all of these crimes are crazy and certainly cringeworthy, they also make for excellent conversation pieces.
