Strike! Baseball Player Takes 95MPH Fastball To The Face
A baseball player took a 95MPH fastball to the face! To make the story even more crazy, he ended up staying in the game!
Can you imagine getting hit in the face by a 95MPH fastball? It would be excruciating! Baseball is supposed to be one of the less violent sports, but you wouldn’t know that after seeing this video.
Baseball Player Hit By 95MPH Fastball In The Face
It happened to James McCann, who plays catcher for the Baltimore Orioles. During an at-bat against the Toronto Blue Jays at Camden Yards, McCann took a fastball to the face from pitcher Yariel Rodriguez. A ball got away from Rodriguez and hit McCann in the face! Even a helmet can save you when the ball comes flying directly at your face. See the video shared by Rob Friedman on X (formerly Twitter) below.
Thankfully, McCann was able to get back on his feet, addressed the injury with some gauze to control the bleeding, and got back in the game. He didn’t miss a second of action! How does that happen after getting a fastball to the face? Baseball players are tougher than they get credit for. Baltimore would go on to win the first game of the double header against the Blue Jays 11-5.
Still not sure how bad the injury is and what the details are but he seems to be doing okay! Looks like a heavyweight fighter after taking the fastball to the face. That would have to be one of the most painful things ever. Plus, it’s coming at you so fast you pretty much have no time to react, prepare, or get out of the way. See what he had to say about the incident after the game below.

It’s great to see him get right back up after that. You can suffer some serious injuries taking a fastball to the face. It can easily break your nose and could easily damage eyeballs or give you a concussion. As a catcher, he might be most prepared for it of any position. They seem to take a beating every game. It’s their job to sit (er, crouch?) there and receive pitches that can reach speeds more than 100 miles per hour. It takes a tough individual to do that! That seems to fit McCann’s description.
McCann has had a solid MLB career. In addition to the Baltimore Orioles, he’s played for the Detroit Tigers, Chicago White Sox, and New York Mets. He was named an All-Star in 2019 while playing with the Chicago White Sox.
