Southwest Florida Tequila Makers Drink To National Tequila Day
Today is National Tequila Day. You might be surprised to known that the popular Mexican spirit has some tasty ties to the Fort Myers and Naples areas. Southwest Florida tequila makers drink to National Tequila Day and here is how you can too.
Musica Tequila is new to the Southwest Florida scene. Owners Chris and Geri Andrews worked five years between Mexico and the United States to bring Musica to life. Besides the local connection, there are several things that make this brand different.
The entire process goes by the low and slow philosophy. It is cooked under lower pressure and high temperature to extract the best flavors. There are no additives in this small batch, small production tequila.
Next, the award-winning bottle design. It was inspired by the shape of a music note and its elegant appearanc stands out on the shelf.
Finally, the Andrew’s tequila business has a mission to give back by supporting local musicians and music education programs. Music and tequila belong together and this brand celebrates the combination.
Perhaps best of all is the flavor. All three of the tequilas are clean, smooth and can easily be enjoyed neat or on the rocks. There is no burn, just layers of flavors.

Nelson Nieves also calls Southwest Florida home but makes mezcal in Mexico. He and his brother founded Bosscal Mezcal about five years ago. It comes in a unique bottle that resembles a rock and pays homage to the rusitc way in which mezcal is made. The agave is roasted in deep pits lined with rocks and wood.
The method imparts a smoky characteristic before the plants are distilled. Nieves produces a couple of mezcals including Bosscal Joven which is light, smooth, and a little sweet on the finish.
My favorite is Bosscal Damiani, named after a yellow wildflower, that is said to have aphrodisiac properties. The botanical is added to the second distillation and gives off a nice floral characteristic. This one is also lighter on that smoky element that mezcal is known for.
