Digital Tipping: Helpful Or A New Inconvenience?
There’s a new trend hitting stores (and going viral on TikTok) about Digital Tipping. Now, it’s the latest trend that has the internet divided.
Some say they’re in support of it and there’s less pressure than other tipping methods. However, others are pointing out that there’s no need for this technology or that it can do more harm than good. Here’s more on the pros and cons of the new trend below.
What Is Digital Tipping And How Is It Different?
In the trending TikTok video shared by @light_travels, you can see an ordinary tip jar at the register of an ice cream place in Maine. However, next to that ordinary tip jar is something unfamiliar with a lit up “$1” sign on it. What is it? It’s a device for Digital Tipping.
The content creator demonstrates how to use it and simply puts his card in and takes it out and it pretty much instantly confirms that he has tipped $1 successfully. So, if you don’t carry cash and don’t have change or a couple bucks to throw in the tip jar you no longer have to worry! You can give $1 very simply and pain-free using your card. Some commenters are celebrating how easy it is and how it doesn’t pressure you to tip like other prompts asking for 25%, 20%, or 15% when you have to search or put in $1 by hand in the custom section. It can be a hassle! This takes care of that. However, other commenters are quick to point out that it’s not necessary and is putting more pressure on us to tip. It has the internet divided and wondering if tipping culture has gone too far?
Tipping etiquette is kind of an unwritten rule and it’s a murky area. I think as a society we got extra generous during the pandemic and now we’re left wondering if we’re supposed to go back to the way it was or continue our generosity. These days it seems like tip jars whether ordinary or for Digital Tipping are popping up everywhere. Your ride share driver, your barber, the ice cream place, even fast food places are asking for more. When does it end? When is it appropriate to tip someone? Many commenters in the video below are saying they don’t feel like they should tip when they’re standing at the counter for service.
