Clearwater Surf Shop Shooter Wanted To “Pick A Fight”
As they say, the camera never blinks. Surveillance video captured every moment of a shooting that left a Largo man dead this week. As one young man stood on the second floor of the Surf Style surf shop on Gulfview Boulevard in Clearwater, another young man walked up to him and struck him. That’s when the first man pulled out a pistol and shot three times, striking the victim twice.
As Clearwater Police Chief Daniel Slaughter reviewed the surveillance video of the shooting yesterday afternoon, he pointed out that the two men seemingly were not acquaintances before the shooting. The shooter has been identified as 20-year-old Johnathon Stanley of Clearwater and the man who died has been identified as 22-year-old Rodney Sweeney of Largo. Police Chief Slaughter added that Stanley appeared to be set on using his gun that day and tht shooting the other man for hitting him was an over-reaction.
Once the shooting occurred, investigators say the suspect hid the gun in a stack of clothing and then hid himself behind more clothing. The victim’s brother was able to find the gun in the store. Once he did, he ran after Stanley but couldn’t find him. After he briefly checked on his injured brother, he left the scene and returned home. First responders arrived on the scene in a matter of seconds and began treating Sweeney. The victim’s brother still had the suspected murder weapon in his possession when police arrived at his home later in the day. While details are still murky, it appears as if the men had a verbal altercation earlier in the day of the shooting.
Chief Slaughter also announced the arrest of another suspect related to the case during the news conference. Zayah Massucci was arrested and charged with being an accessory after the fact and marijuana possession related to the shooting. The sheriff told reporters that a vast array of network surveillance cameras greatly expedited the identification and capture of a suspect in the case. The network uses facial recognition software and high-definition cameras along with cutting-edge technology to identify threats and persons related to unlawful incidents.
while an incident such as this may make people think twice about visiting the Clearwater beach area, crime is actually down in the area and crimes like these are very isolated and far between.
