Why We Still Spring Forward And Fall Back
My girlfriend gets downright pissed when it’s time to change the clocks, and it seems like we are doing it constantly these days. Every fall and every spring, we either add or subtract an hour. We all know that Daylight Saving Time was put into place many years ago, when farmers needed more time to gather crops from the fields and such. But what does that have to do with us?
For many years, Floridians have argued that keeping our lives “sprung forward” would be the best choice for our tourism industry. Back in 2018, we almost got it done. DST ends on November 6th. That means this weekend we “fall back” an hour, theoretically allowing us to sleep an additional hour. But you an I know the reality of it. Our sleep schedule gets trashed for about a month and we feel like we’ve actually missed out on sleep instead of gaining it. Both sides of the political spectrum in Congress agreed that daylight Saving Time should end in our state, but here we are! The problem is, the Florida legislature has already decided, but the U.S. Congress has to agree, too. And until they do, we are screwed. The law has been passed in Florida, but not at the federal level. Is that just weird or what?
I know it’s hard for you guys to believe, but our government can be woefully inadequate at their jobs. That’s why time has quite literally stood still for us. And it’s not just Florida. There are now 19 states that want to do the same thing. Still others want to stick with Standard Time, such as Arizona and Hawaii. The bill has been frozen in time since March, and it will remain that way until the federal government decides it’s important enough to dust off the pages and give it a glance. Source: WFLA.com
