Florida Firefighter Rescues Young Girl From Flood Waters PIC
I’ve been trying like hell to find uplifting stories to show you today. Even in the midst of the sorrow that Ian has brought us, there are positive stories, pictures and videos. Take this story, about a Florida firefighter who rescued a little girl from flood waters last week. As the picture shows, the little girl, still wearing her pink pajamas, clings tightly to a firefighter as he carries her to safety across flood waters. Believe it or not, the facts behind the picture are even more intense than the photo itself.
The fire department in St. Augustine says it carried out 26 rescue missions during Hurricane Ian. One particular firefighter was captured on film as he rescued a young girl from waist-deep flood waters. That firefighter is Hardus Oberholzer, who said he was involved in about a dozen rescues that day, but couldn’t give an exact number. As soon as someone was dropped off at a safe point, another rescue mission was initiated. The fire department shared a photo on Facebook featuring Oberholzer pulling a young girl from swirling waist-deep water and carrying her to safety.
The firefighter said the rescue deeply affected him personally, as he has a son who is approxiimately the same age as the young girl. Oberholzer said, “She’ll have a little piece of my heart forever. I’ll remember for the rest of my life and I hope they do too.”
St. Augustine’s Fire Chief Carlos Aviles told reporters that he’s recieved high praise for his department’s efforts during and after the devastation of Hurricane Ian.
