Angus Young Recalls the First Time Meeting Eddie Van Halen
Angus Young recalled the first time he met Eddie Van Halen and remembers how well EVH and his brother, Malcolm Young, hit it off.
In an interview with Ultimate Classic Rock, Angus recalled how it took a number of years for their paths to officially cross due to AC/DC and Van Halen’s conflicting touring schedules. Even when the two bands found themselves on the same festival bill, their busy schedules during the day prevented a proper meeting.
However, Angus says he and Eddie finally met when both AC/DC and Van Halen were performing during the 1984 Monsters of Rock show at England’s Donnington Park.
“He was just happy to see me. He gave me a big hug, all excited, and the one thing I remember is that he had this big smile from ear to ear, this big grin,” said Angus. “He talked a lot. Faster than how I talk. He was just excited we were on the same shows.”
Angus would add, “He liked hanging out, especially with Mal, because they could go out afterwards, to a bar or somewhere. Or he’d go out with Brian [Johnson] and play a dart game. To me, he was just full of life.”
Angus said the last time he saw EVH was at an AC/DC show in San Bernardino, Calif. while on tour in support of 2000’s Stiff Upper Lip album. He said, “He was the exact same as when I’d last seen him. Big smile, big hug, very happy to see me, super happy to see Mal, he loved Mal, had a very tight bond with Mal. The saddest part was hearing when his throat cancer had come back. You still hope that he would have gotten through that. So it was a big loss for everyone. In the musical world, yes, and obviously for his family and anyone that was close to him.”
