Robert DeLeo on Making STP’s ‘Core’
Stone Temple Pilots celebrates the 25th anniversary of its debut album, Core, with today’s (September 29) release of a box set that features the original album in packages that include loads of bonus material, including live shows.
Core was an auspicious debut, certified eight times platinum and launching the hits “Sex Type Thing,” “Plush” and “Creep.” And even though it was a quarter-century ago, bassist Robert DeLeo tells us that he still remembers well the attitude that drove he and his bandmates, including brother Dean DeLeo on guitar, while making the album:
“I look back and think about that frustrated, highly motivated, searching for I don’t know what and trying to soothe it with the music that we were making. That kid back the making his way across the country from New Jersey and living in my car and trying to score a $5 an hour job to survive. And I think all that wrapped up shows on that record. There’s a lot of frustration and anger and sadness and all that wrapped into one on that record. I don’t go back and listen to it much, but I can certainly relate to it, still.”
The Core reissue comes in Deluxe and Super Deluxe editions; The latter features four discs packed with rarities and unreleased material — including STP’s 1993 MTV Unplugged appearance from which “Secret Garden” is exclusively premiered — and a DVD with music videos and a 5.1 Surround Sound mix of the album.
STP has been auditioning new frontmen during past couple of years to replace original singer Scott Weiland and short-term sub Chester Bennington, both of whom have passed away during the past two years.
