New Lennon-Ono Documentary Coming to IMAX Screens in 2025, Shows Never-Before-Seen Concert Footage
Magnolia Pictures will release ‘One to One: John & Yoko’ in IMAX theaters on April 11, 2025. The movie follows the iconic couple during their time in Greenwich Village from 1971 to 1973.
Oscar-winning director Kevin Macdonald leads this intimate film. It features previously unreleased footage and newly restored audio from Lennon’s last complete concert after The Beatles – the One to One benefit at Madison Square Garden in ’72.
According to Deadline, “The docu is a revelatory look at the 18 months John Lennon and Yoko Ono spent living in Greenwich Village in the early 1970s with never-before-seen material and newly restored footage of Lennon’s only full-length, post-Beatles concert.”
Following their arrival in the U.S. in ’71, we see John and Yoko settling into a simple New York apartment and making their presence known on American television. Their son, Sean Ono Lennon, handled the audio restoration for the Garden performance.
They put on the benefit concert to help kids at Willowbrook State School on Staten Island. The facility, which cared for children with mental disabilities, had recently been exposed for its terrible living conditions.
After escaping intense media attention in Britain, the couple found new inspiration in New York. Their stay there produced several albums, including Imagine and Sometime in New York City.
Actor Brad Pitt teamed up with Dede Gardner as executive producers. Peter Worsley and Alice Webb round out the production team, while John Von Thaden from Magnolia secured the distribution rights.
The film debuts at the Venice Film Festival and then heads to Sundance’s Spotlight section in January 2025. After playing in IMAX theaters, HBO will broadcast the documentary before it moves to Max for streaming.
