2025 Oscars: All Rock-Related Nominations (And 1 Big Snub)
The nominations for the 2025 Oscars were unveiled today (Jan. 23), and the rock world sure did feel a lot of love and one surprising snub.
Here’s a breakdown of notable nominations rock fans should know.
A Complete Unknown is Well-Known by the Academy
The Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown received eight Oscar nominations in the following categories: Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Costume Design, and Best Sound.
Timothée Chalamet received a Best Actor nomination for his portrayal as Dylan. This is Chalamet’s second Academy Award nomination. His first nomination was in 2018 for Best Actor for his performance in Call Me by Your Name.
Edward Norton received a Best Supporting Actor nomination for his portrayal of folk icon Pete Seeger. This is Norton’s fourth Academy Award nomination. His previous nominations came in 1997 for Best Supporting Actor in Primal Fear, 1999 for Best Actor in American History X, and 2015 for Best Supporting Actor in Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance).
For Monica Barbaro, who played Joan Baez and received a Best Supporting Actress nomination, this is her first Academy Award nomination in her career.
Another Oscar Nomination for Sir Elton
Elton John received his fifth Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song for “Never Too Late,” which was featured in the documentary Elton John: Never Too Late. John co-wrote the song with his longtime writing partner Bernie Taupin, Brandi Carlile, and Andrew Watt.
Sir Elton has previously won two Oscars in his legendary career. The first came in 1995 for Best Original Song for “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” from The Lion King. The second came in 2020 for Best Original Song for “I’m Gonna Love Me Again” from his biopic Rocketman.
Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross Snubbed
A surprising snub from the 2025 Oscars nomination ceremony came when Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross weren’t nominated for Best Original Score for their work on Challengers. The duo won the Golden Globe for Best Original Score for their work on Challengers earlier this month, and they were on the shortlist for a nomination along with 19 other films.
