WHAT THE F@#$%!? Punta Gorda Restricts Signs With Obscene Language
Punta Gorda is sick and tired of all the signs!!
They recently passed a new sign code that will restrict signs containing indecent or obscene signs or flags on residential property. It’s not just limited to signs and flags, it also pertains to people’s clothing.
Punta Gorda began working on this code at the beginning of 2020 when a lot of realtor signs were posted as well as presidential campaign flags and signs. The amount of offensive and obscene language was enough to turn the heads of the City Council.
City Council Member Nancy Prafke said, “There are just things lately where people have pushed the envelope to the point where it’s crazy. In this particular case, I’m not sure that some of the things we have seen will ever be acceptable.”
The code now restricts signs that contain sexual or excretory activities or organs in a manner that is offensive. Or what they consider to be ‘fighting words’ such as a person’s race, color, religion, disability, national origin, ethnicity or sex.
It will also limit the amount. Punta Gorda residents will only be allowed to have 4 displays. This could be any combination of yard signs and flags.
Violations of these offenses would result in a $100 fine and a $200 fine for 2nd offenses.
I’m pretty sure this has citizens of Punta Gorda saying, “What the f@#$%?!”
