Police have launched a traffic crackdown on Colonial Boulevard, where an incredible 689 crashes have happened within just two miles between Fowler Street and McGregor Boulevard since 2023.

This busy stretch sees between 50,000 to 60,000 vehicles daily, making it one of Fort Myers' most dangerous roads. Officers are now watching the area closely, giving out warnings and tickets to stop dangerous driving.

Recent police stops caught drivers going 13 mph over the speed limit. In another case, officers stopped a driver who ran a red light with an expired tag.

Several things make this road risky. Heavy traffic during rush hour leads to lots of rear-end crashes. The many stores along the road create messy traffic patterns, especially on weekends.

Efforts are underway to add left-turn lanes on Deleon Street to reduce congestion, and while talks about introducing flyovers are ongoing, no final decisions have been made as the focus remains on the reconstruction of the Cape Coral Bridge.
