Lee County's eighth annual Donated Not Wasted food drive runs from April 7 to April 21. The program encourages winter residents to donate any unused food items before heading back up north for summer.
The campaign has saved 38,700 pounds of food from ending up in landfills since its inception, providing 32,200 meals through Harry Chapin Food Bank.
Collection bins are set up at parks and libraries throughout the area. Staff look for unopened canned goods and nonperishables that seasonal residents might otherwise toss when packing up. You can drop off items at the Estero and North Fort Myers Recreation Centers, along with the main libraries in Fort Myers, Bonita Springs, and Cape Coral.
The initiative is a collaborative effort between Lee County Solid Waste, Harry Chapin Food Bank, Waste Pro, Lee County libraries, and Lee County Parks and Recreation.
