Probably one of the juiciest dating rumors we've heard in the last year would be the one surrounding Only Murders in the Building co-stars Meryl Streep and Martin Short. Yes, the award-winning actress, 74, and the theater alum, 73, have had rumors of a secret romance trailing the two for quite some time now. The rumor mill intensified on Sunday (January 7) when the pair attended the Golden Globes together, representing the Hulu mystery/comedy series for which they both received nominations. Sadly, neither of them won. Comedy writer Louis Virtel posted on X (formerly Twitter): “Are Meryl Streep and Martin Short dating… because if that’s true… that’s like Gene Wilder and Gilda Radner multiplied by Mel Brooks and Anne Bancroft…”
However, Short’s representative has now cleared up the claims. In a statement issued to The Messenger, Short's rep said: “They are just very good friends, nothing more.” Streep and Short's respective characters, Loretta Durkin and Oliver Putnam, played a couple in the series' third season. It's the first time they've shared a screen credit. Showrunner John Hoffman told TheWrap that Streep personally thanked him for writing Oliver and Loretta's love story into the season. "It's pretty unexpected to imagine a pairing of Meryl Streep with Martin Short and watch them find this incredible connection together and, as Meryl said, to not have it be twee or about the age or about any of that," he said. "It's just a beautiful romance that you buy, I think because of who these two characters are."
Short and Streep's Pasts
Short has one daughter and two sons with his late wife, Nancy Dolman; she died from ovarian cancer in 2010. "Our marriage was a triumph, so it's tough," he told AARP in 2019. "She died in 2010, but I still communicate with her all the time. It's 'Hey Nan,' you know? How would she react to this decision or that, especially regarding our three kids." Meanwhile, Streep and her husband, Don Gummer, are no longer together. Per People, the former couple quietly ended their 45-year marriage romantically six years ago. They share one son and three daughters together.
