ISTANBUL, TURKEY - OCTOBER 18: The cruise ship Viking Sky is seen docked at the newly opened Galataport Cruise Terminal on October 18, 2021 in Istanbul, Turkey. The Viking Sky is the second cruise ship to arrive at the newly opened port which has been closed for construction since 2015. However Turkey's cruise tourism suffered a number of setbacks since 2016 due to geopolitical and security concerns and then the start of the coronavirus. Almost all cruise companies diverted their Turkey tours to other countries during the five year period forcing tourism numbers to plummet. With the lifting of coronavirus restrictions and the opening of the new port which is capable of accommodating three cruise ships simultaneously giving it an approximate capacity of 15,000 passengers per day, brings hope to local businesses that foreign tourists numbers will begin to rebound.
