Through different locations, including the Fort Myers' STARS Complex in Dunbar, the Harry Chapin Food Bank helps feed a quarter-million people every month.
The STARS Complex saw many families during its February 5th food giveaway. This spot has become a crucial resource for local families, helping those with health issues and money struggles.
Among those getting help was Lisa, who has multiple sclerosis and picks up food for her family. Mary comes by weekly to get supplies to feed her six grandchildren.
“I have six grandkids,” Mary told Wink News. “It'd be hard, but thank God for Harry Chapin. I come out here every Monday morning, and I stand out here, and I wait for Harry Chapin to come and they give us food, and I thank God for them.”
CEO Richard LeBer says that unexpected life events often force families to ask for help. Many have to choose between food and other basic needs — the Harry Chapin Food Bank helps alleviate this problem for many.
