Chad Smith Watches Busker Drum RHCP Song
Chad Smith was part of a very funny clip that recently went viral involving a busker, and it has such a cool, heartwarming ending.
In this clip, which can be seen here, a drummer has set up his kit in an outdoor shopping mall. This drummer is playing along to the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ song “Otherside.” There is one person sitting down and watching this drummer in this shopping mall, and it happens to be Smith. The video is captioned, “Imagine shooting hoops in front of Michael Jordan and not even realizing it?”
The comments on the clip are outstanding. One person wrote, “Who says he didn’t realize? He was probably sitting there the whole time going, ‘omg, omg, don’t mess up, don’t mess up.'” Another person made the joke, “I wish they zoomed out more and Will Ferrell was watching Chad Smith watching this guy.”
Eventually, this clip makes its way back to the drummer in the clip, whose name is Armond Davis. He explains in a separate clip, “Honestly, as a street performer, sometimes we have incredibly slow days, and that was one of them. I played at least five songs back to back to back, and I got zero attention. So, after a little while, I just zoned out into the music, and by time I was halfway done with ‘Otherside,’ I realize somebody was sitting in front of me.”
He continues, “And he had really good energy, right? He’s bobbing his head. I could tell he had to be a drummer because he had good subdivision with his feet. And he looked familiar, but I just couldn’t quite put my finger on it at the time. But anyways, I zoned back out into the music. I finish the song,a nd he gets up and walks away. And I was like, ‘Ah, I for sure thought I was gonna get a tip that time.'”
In a “Part II” video, Davis says he finished drumming and started stretching a bit. A woman then approaches him and asks if he knew the man watching him play was Smith.
“My heart stopped,” said Davis. “I was like, ‘Oh! I knew I recognized him!’ She pointed to the store he walked into, and I slowly walk into that same direction in disbelief, just trying to process everything that just happened. And then [Smith] walks up to me and says, ‘Dude, you rocked it!’ In that iconic moment, it made me feel like everything I ever did as a drummer was so worth it.”
Davis was able to get a picture with Smith, and he added, “Chad Smith watching me play and saying that I rocked it is definitely more valuable than the tip.”
