VIDEO: Hammerhead Shark In Ankle-Deep Water On Lee County Beach
Two women were in Boca Grande at Boca Pass when they spotted a hammerhead shark extremely close to them as they waded in the shallow water. One of the women, Wendy Donnelly of North Port, recorded the encounter on her phone.
We are in the middle of feeding season, so it’s possible they were in close feeding off of tarpon and stingrays.
A retired scientist told Channel 8 some tips on how to safe when it comes to sharks.
- If you see schools of tarpon, get out of the water immediately. Hungry sharks could be close behind them.
- Don’t swim at night…unless you want to be shark bait
- Don’t swim where someone is fishing..if there’s prey, there could be a predator
- Don’t wear shiny jewelry to the beach..it could resemble fish scales and they might start drooling
- Don’t wear bright colored bathing suits..sharks can see them from a distance
