Angus and Malcolm Young’s Childhood Home Demolished
Construction crews building a multi-million dollar residential development in Australia knocked down the former home of AC/DC founders Angus and Malcolm Young.
Located at 4 Burleigh Street in Burwood, Sydney, the Youngs came up with plans for their band in this house back in 1973. Ten years ago, the New South Wales National Trust put it on their Register of Historic Houses. However, this designation didn’t give any legal protection against demolition.
Burwood Square Pty Ltd demolished the home for their new housing development and said they weren’t aware of its importance to rock history. General Manager Leon Kmita said in a statement that they were shocked when they found out about the AC/DC connection after work began. His team deeply regretted the demolition. The construction team plans to create a themed venue using materials saved from the old house.
Fans are understandably upset by this news. Utopia Records, a local record store near the former home of the Youngs, took to Instagram to slam the actions of Burwood Square Pty Ltd. The store wrote that that home was “possibly the most iconic residence in the entire country.” They added, “One house out of an entire continent of houses couldn’t be protected as a Australian Rock Museum or a tourist destination for the GAZILLION ACCA fans worldwide? Graceland keeps Memphis alive and this spot could have kept money coming into Burwood for decades to come.”
