SANTA ROSA, CA - FEBRUARY 07: A Russian River Brewing Company customer takes a sip of the newly released Pliny the Younger triple IPA beer on February 7, 2014 in Santa Rosa, California. Hundreds of people lined up hours before the opening of Russian River Brewing Co. to taste the 10th annual release of the wildly popular Pliny the Younger triple IPA beer that will only be available on tap from February 7th through February 20th. Craft beer aficionados rank Pliny the Younger as one of the top beers in the world. The craft beer sector of the beverage industry has grown from being a niche market into a fast growing 12 billion dollar business, as global breweries continue to purchase smaller regional craft breweries such this week's purchase of New York's Blue Point Brewing by AB Inbev. We’re so lucky to have so many breweries in our area and to show our love for them, there’s a whole week dedicated to the frothy beverage as SWFL Craft Beer Week kicks off September 1st.

If you’re staying in town this Labor Day weekend, at least there’s plenty to do here in SWFL, especially if you’re a fan of craft beer. This is the 2nd Annual Craft Beer Week presented by the Greater Fort Myers Chamber of Commerce and there’s a whole series of events throughout the area celebrating Southwest Florida’s craft breweries from September 1st-5th. I love checking out breweries, getting a flight and checking out their offerings, and especially now with fall on the horizon, the pumpkin beers will be back on tap very soon so I can’t wait.

The participating breweries this year include Coastal Dayz, Crazy Dingo, Fort Myers Brewing Co, Millennial, Palm City, Point Ybel, Riptide, Eight Foot and The Tubby Pig.

Fun Facts About Craft Beer:

  • Craft breweries make up 98% of all U.S. operating breweries
  • The first ever beer brewers were all women
  • Cenosillicaphobia is the fear of an empty glass
  • In medieval Europe, the average person drank 220-250 litres of beer a year! As it had undergone fermentation, it was cleaner and safer to drink than the water
  • Craft beer is good for your bones because of the high level of silicon (whew, no fear of osteoporosis here then!)
  • The United States is the second largest hops producer in the world behind Germany
