Lee County started accepting applications for parking permits in Boca Grande. A new ordinance splits the island into zones with time restrictions. Charlotte County has launched a dispute over the rules, claiming they block fair beach access for its people.
Four permit types exist. Residents get "A" decals. Hotel guests receive "B" placards. Island workers and volunteers obtain "C" decals. House guests or service providers get "D" placards. All permits cost nothing. Non-residential zones allow three-hour parking from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. if you don't have a permit.
Lee County commissioners approved Ordinance No. 25-16 in August 2025. First Street through 19th Street no longer has public parking. Downtown parking got capped at three hours without a permit. Enforcement hasn't started yet, but the Lee County Sheriff's Office will handle violations once signs go up and permits get distributed.
Charlotte County commissioners approved a resolution in November 2025 to fight the restrictions. They argued the August ordinance blocks Charlotte County residents from reaching island beaches without good reason.
"A" and "C" permits are valid for one year and must stay visible. "B" permits work for the length of a hotel stay, and "D" permits can be short-term passes for rentals or guests, or they might last one year.
Applications for "A" resident decals, "C" employee and volunteer decals, and "D" house guest placards can be found online. Hotels and motels will hand out "B" placards to registered guests.
Pickup happens at two locations. The Louise duPont Crowninshield Community House sits at 240 Banyan St. The Boca Grande Community Center is at 131 First St. The Crowninshield Room will host pickup sessions on several dates through Dec. 29, with most running from 9 a.m. to noon.
