Cape Coral has kicked off a fundraiser to construct a 250-foot flagpole that'll become the tallest free-standing American flagpole in Florida. The "Raise the Flag" campaign aims to collect $500,000 for the pole, which will commemorate the United States' 250th birthday in July 2026.
City Manager Michael Ilczyszyn proposed the project. He announced the campaign kick-off at the Nov. 5, 2025, City Council meeting. The pole will stand near the Veterans Memorial Monument at Bernice Braden Park.
"During the budget discussion, I had mentioned to you all I had a vision for how we would celebrate the July 4 anniversary for next year, being the 250th anniversary. I initially requested we put additional funding in the budget to go above and beyond what we had planned. That funding was not approved," Ilczyszyn said at the meeting, according to Cape Coral Breeze.
Council members liked the idea but didn't approve the budget funds. The project will depend on donations from residents and businesses.
Ilczyszyn made the first donation of $1,000. He encouraged residents to take part in the effort, similar to how founding families funded the existing veterans monument.
Donations can be made on the campaign's website.
