Jason’s Instagram Surprise!

We've known for a long time that our devices are listening to us. They are tracking us and we are being targeted with ads and videos based on the stuff we search and the stuff our phones hear. Well, something we talked about yesterday made it's way onto Jason's Instagram and it was quite the surprise!

If you were with us yesterday, or watched the Peep Show from yesterday, then you know what we talked about. We were talking about being surprised by Ladymen. You can catch up HERE if you'd like.

So, this morning we were talking about how we all received targeted ads. When we first noticed it years ago, we did an experiment and tried to see if mentioning something would lead to targeted ads and videos on listener's phones. It worked. We said the word eggroll a bunch and listeners were getting ads for days after hearing it. They never searched, their phones just heard it.

So, after the show yesterday, Jason opened Instagram an he was hit with a targeted video. It was the video of a woman talking on a bridge. It suggested that he read the caption, so he did, and it turns out that it was a transwoman. No issues with the transwoman, but it's not what he's looking for and he's never searched it out. But, the video was suggesting that maybe he is. Lisa is curious why she doesn't ever get targeted material from the show but it seems that the guys do. Could it be certain apps we have, like Facebook, that she doesn't?

Anyway, after mentioning a few words, listeners once again started to see ads for places like Thailand, since we mentioned Thailand.
