College football's first proper weekend is not just a series of "thrash for cash" games. At least now that the College Football Playoff is so expansive, a top 25 school can lose at the outset and remain in contention for a CFP berth. That's encouraging teams like Texas and Ohio State to clash in a well-matched contest, added to Clemson and LSU meeting in another game with tight odds. Alabama at Florida State surely seemed like another Week 1 showdown of epic proportions … way back when it was scheduled.

Florida State is a grim (+14) underdog for a debut game against Alabama, as the Crimson Tide prepares to visit the Seminoles at 3:30 p.m. EST this Saturday. FSU, of course, is coming off a historically lousy season in which the Seminoles went from having won double-digit games to losing 10 games. The opposing Tide isn't coming off another national title, but has confidence in spades next to FSU.

Alabama's long preseason injury list almost makes Kalen DeBoer's visitors more intimidating. The SEC linchpin has few serious injury cases to go with a swath of small bruises from a rugged training camp.

Spread

Alabama Crimson Tide at Florida State Seminoles Predictions and Picks

Florida State head coach Mike Norvell has not screamed and shouted his way through the offseason, instead going for reassuring words about how FSU simply needs to execute like it does in practice. That's not a good enough explanation for the Seminoles' total collapse in 2024. But it's a better idea than the fighting words offered from quarterback Thomas Castellanos, who has riled up the Tide prior to Week 1.

Sports Illustrated reports that Alabama's defense is enraged by Castellanos's remarks, in which the QB opined that Alabama doesn't have Nick Saban to "save" the Tide anymore. SI blogger Dustin Lewis quoted Alabama's lineman LT Overton: "The disrespect will be addressed accordingly."

Alabama's QB Ty Simpson has been called a boom-or-bust athlete. By angering the Alabama defense, FSU's quarterback has made himself into a boom-or-bust prospect for Saturday. Bet an over-total-points pick, and watch FSU's cocky passer take chances against a favorite that could win 63-10 or lose 42-41.
