Can Survival Food Be The Key To Beating Inflation?
As a resident of Southwest Florida, I understand preparing for the worst. My hurricane preparations include a generator, fuel, water and food. But a sale at Costco has made me rethink survival food. This might be a way of beating inflation. Sure, prices aren’t going up like they were, but they’re also really not coming down either. Let’s look at some options.
Survival Food On Sale
What got me to thinking was a sale at Costco. It’s the “Readywise 150 Serving Emergency Food Bucket (150 Total Servings)”. It’s on sale right now for $80.
So let’s do the math. That’s 53 cents a serving. A little more than a bag of ramen, but a lot less than the $2 candy bar in the vending machine. I’m a big fan of eating lunch at my desk rather than going out, so maybe this in an option. I’ve been packing sandwiches, so let’s see what’s inside.
What’s Inside The Bucket?
I’m not sure I’d want to have to live on these things, but for a quick lunch they should do the trick. Meals include Creamy Pasta and Vegetables. Cheesy Macaroni. Pasta Alfredo. Teriyaki Rice. Tomato Basil Soup With Pasta. Apple Cinnamon Cereal. Lastly, Brown Sugar and Maple Grain Cereal. Not a bad variety. Just add water.
Is Survival Food Any Good?
For that, I have no idea. So I took to the reviews to find out more. People seem to be ok with the taste, but the first recurring thing I see in the reviews is to expect a few broken pouches. So that knocks the meal count down by a few. Secondly, the pouches are not single serving, and the meals need to be heated, like in a pan. So the idea of using these for my at-work meals is pretty much out.
Survival Food – The Verdict
So yes, you could probably use these to feed the kids, but I’m not sure there’s any real benefit above canned food. Survival food seems to be for people on the move in an emergency. For that, this is probably a good deal. For day to day meals, less so.
It is hurricane season, and Texas has already seen one hurricane earlier this July. We have a long season ahead of us, and prepping here in Southwest Florida is part of the deal. Have your hurricane kit ready.
Pictures Of Bonita Springs In The Aftermath Of Hurricane Ian
The entire Bonita Beach area of Bonita Springs area is absolutely destroyed. Our entire Southwest Florida area is reeling from Hurricane Ian. Most of us are without power and internet. We have limited cell and text messaging available. Many of you reading this are from outside of our area, so if can help:

Hurricane Ian made landfall near Cayo Costa, an island off the coast of Fort Myers, just after 3 p.m. on Wednesday. With Ian, came 150 mph winds, the fifth-strongest hurricane to make landfall in the U.S. According to ABC News, “Ian then made a second landfall 90 minutes later, still as a Category 4 storm with 145 mph winds, just south of Punta Gorda, near Pirate Harbor.”
While the efforts to restore Southwest Florida’s beaches will be a years long recovery, our whole area is suffering greatly. The causeway to Sanibel collapsed and the docks sustained heavy damage, making the island only accessible by helicopter. There’s some areas where we don’t even know yet the extent of the damage. As you’ll see in the pictures, law enforcement is limiting access to certain areas.
Bonita Springs will rebuild. But this is going to take a long time.
