Here’s Why You Should Start Putting Your Car Keys Inside A Metal Box
A TikTok’er named Brian Mello has gone viral with a video showing how car thieves can hack into your key fob . . . and steal your car. He shows a home security video of thieves using a special antenna that performs a “relay attack.” To prevent this from happening, he suggests you put your car keys inside a metal box.
This special antenna amplifies the signal coming FROM the key fob in the house, and it tricks the car into thinking the fob is very close. There IS a way to avoid this. Put your key fob in a metal box to block the outside signal. You’re going to want to see Mello talk about it below.
How Thieves Are Breaking Into Vehicles Without Car Keys
Before we get to the video, you should be aware that relay attacks aren’t the only way that thieves are breaking into vehicles these days without having the car keys. In addition to relay attacks, there is a method known as signal jamming. For this, the would-be thefts use a gadget to jam the signal allowing your car keys to lock the car. Typically, they won’t even notice that the lock didn’t take. It’s often just muscle memory that we clicked the button, and no need to double check. Big mistake!
Then, there’s also key programming. Key Programming is similar to the old hot wire technique, but more modern. They will break in (jamming device or by breaking a window) and mess with the standard diagnostic port, giving them access to the car. Cars with push to start buttons instead of keys are especially susceptible to this method of thievery.
Additionally, there’s close range testing. This happens during times where you’re close to your car with your car keys or fob. This is commonly seen when you’re camping and your car is nearby, or if you have a small driveway. You should always keep your car keys or fob out of range. There are several more methods they could use to try to gain entry and access to your car, but these are some of the most common right now.
