Jet Wing Falls Off, Makes Emergency Landing In Tampa…Really.
Parts are falling off of jets now. It’s a thing. Believe it or not, there’s video if it, and it’s directly below.
A Cessna Citation that was flying at 27,000 feet over St. Petersburg experienced a horrific scene. The pilot, who was the only person on board, reported that the winglet on the edge of a wing had totally flown off of the aircraft, taking a portion of the wing with it. If you’re unfamiliar with winglets, they are perched upon the outermost portion of the wing. They are typically an upright structure at approximately 90 degrees to the upper wing surface. Officials at Tampa International Airport said they recieved notification of the in-flight breakaway minutes before it landed safely. Officials from Tampa International Airport said the airplane took off from Arkansas without any obvious problems. As with any issue that causes an emergency landing, the entire case will be investigated by the FAA.
What’s even crazier than parts falling off of an airplane? Our very own local TV Channel 8 and their airborne Eagle 8 caught the landing of the damaged aircraft as it happened. The captain landed the aircraft safely with no inury to himself or anyone on the ground. Even though the jet anded with no issues, emergency crews on the ground responded in full force. A big thank you goes out to that pilot who kept his cool even when he was in a very stressful situation. Source: WFLA.com
