Rock Lake Resort
Another piece of Old Florida will be going away in downtown Ft. Myers after Sunday. Rock Lake Resort. The above is a picture of the resort in 1957.
The Rock Lake Resort which has been in operation since 1947 was recently sold and set to be demolished. The five acre site located at 2937 Palm Beach Blvd, is home to nine cabins, a lake and pool which was built by James Moore when Harry Truman was President.
Stan & Haney, longtime residents of the area, think that something can be done. But don’t have the answer just yet. NBC2, reports “Joanne Miller is with the Southwest Florida Historical Society and is hoping some of the property will be preserved. “Little by little we’re losing everything of historical importance,” Miller noted.”
Preserving ‘old Florida’ is a hot topic as more and more development is happening. Estero is doing a wonderful job at buying up land and keeping it from being overdeveloped. It only takes a quick trip to Miami to see what can happen when urban areas go unchecked.
What exactly is going to happen to the property at Rock lake Resort after September 11th is unknown. But I’m sure we’ll find out soon.
