Florida Man Sentenced After Filing 745 Tax Returns In 19 States
I’m sure most people know tax fraud isn’t looked highly upon, but leave it to a Florida man to fraudulently file 745 tax returns in 19 states.
40 year-old Damian Barrett of Homestead owned two different tax prep companies in Florida, and used one of them to submit legitimate tax returns for clients and the other to submit fraudulent returns.
Barrett had a few different scams going on here, receiving over $234,000, $130,000 coming from Oregon alone, after filing 348 tax returns there.
He also left out more than $21,000 in income on his personal income tax return in 2016 and didn’t file one at all in 2017.
While it sounds like he may have been on to something, the cash train came to a halt when Barrett was charged was mail fraud, filing a false tax return and aggravated identity theft.
Prosecutors say Barrett has been sentenced to 54 months in prison with three years probation to follow, also having to pay more than $234,000 in restitution to 11 states and more than $74,000 to the IRS.
