A Deadly Zebra Cobra is on the Loose in North Carolina
Residents of Raleigh, North Carolina are walking with their eyes to the ground after a deadly Zebra cobra got loose in the city.
The venomous seven-foot snake — which is native to Africa, not North Carolina — was last spotted at about 1:30 a.m. Tuesday in a residential area, police say. Making the situation even more urgent is the fact that Zebra cobras are classified as “spitting” snakes — meaning they spit venom into the eyes of their prey, shutting down their victims’ nervous systems, according to the African Snakebite Institute.
About 12 hours after the snake was last spotted, police conducted a search of a home owned by Keith and Rebecca Gilford, law enforcement documents reveal. Although investigators have not yet released information about the warrant, local media outlets are reporting the couple’s son, Christopher, has shown off his extensive collection of pet snakes on Facebook.
