Government officials in Japan say the Tokyo Summer Olympics will go on, despite a new report that said otherwise.

On Thursday, the British newspaper The Times reported the Summer Olympics were going to be canceled because of the ongoing pandemic.

But, Friday morning, the local organizing committee released a statement stating plans are moving forward.

"[We are] fully focused on hosting the games this summer."

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach also pledged the games will happen.

“We have, at this moment, no reason whatsoever to believe that the Olympic Games in Tokyo will not open on the 23rd of July in the Olympic Stadium in Tokyo,” Bach told Kyodo News. “There is no Plan B.”

The Tokyo Summer Olympics were originally scheduled for last summer but got rescheduled for summer 2021.

Bach also said that, as of now, the Winter Olympics in Beijing, scheduled for February 2022, would also be held on time.
