The Fort Myer’s Police Department announced the closing of a cold case from 1984.
Claretha Gibbs, 31, was found with a gunshot wound to her abdomen off of Palm Ave. and Lincoln Blvd. in 1984. She was taken to the hospital where she later succumbed to her wound.
A rag with DNA from the suspect was found. But at the time, testing and profiling DNA was still in its infant stages.
It wasn’t until 2019 that they uploaded the DNA sample to the Parabon Snapshot and developed a new profile.
It came back as a match to James Glen Drinnon of Okeechobee, Fl.
When authorities confronted the man on January 13, 2020, he admitted to Shooting Gibbs.
He claimed that Gibbs was a prostitute that tried to rob him with a gun. A scuffle ensued, ending with an accidental discharge of the weapon. He then fled the scene and discarded the weapon out of his window.
Just 5 days after police spoke to Drinnon, he was found dead inside of his home. His cause of death is not clear at this moment.
