Beasley Best Community of Caring

Oregon became the first state to decriminalize heroin, cocaine, and meth, according to the Associated Press.

“Oregon needs to shift its focus to addressing drugs through a humane, cost-effective, health approach,” the bill reads.

The bill requires law enforcement to spend more time on community safety, but Oregon law enforcement officers in 2017 arrested more than 8,000 people in cases where simple drug possession was the most serious offense.

This new bill is funded by marijuana tax revenue, which will cost more than $100 million a year.

Only small amounts of drugs are decriminalized, such as less than 1 gram of heroin or MDMA; 2 grams of cocaine or methamphetamine; 12 grams of psilocybin mushrooms; and 40 doses of LSD, oxycodone, or methadone, according to Fox News.
