Stone Temple Pilots Offer Up Details on New Album
Stone Temple Pilots are in the middle of their U.S. tour with Rival Sons, but in between downtime off the road, they managed to complete their eighth studio album.
Vocalist Jeff Gutt and drummer Eric Kretz both appeared on Talkin’ Rock with Meltdown where they confirmed they wrapped the album just before they kicked off their European tour this summer.
“It’s like we’re sitting on this beautiful gem, and we can’t wait to show it to you,” said Kretz. “It’s a little different for us. It’s always got our elements in it to do a whole album in that style is how it’s different.” When asked about the style of the album, Gutt said, “I guess you’d say it’s more acoustic-based with some more instrumentation.” Kretz concurred and added, “But there’s still a lot of electric guitars. It’s just not a heavy, rocking album. It’s something really personal to all of us.”
This will be the second STP album that will feature Gutt on vocal, and on this album, he says, ” I kind of put my stamp on it a little bit more than the last one. The last one was us getting to know each other as songwriters and everything was kind of a feeling-out process and understanding how they write and how to bring up ideas or how everyone deals with each other. It’s a very intimate thing. It’s like being married to three dudes at the same time…They gave me a lot of rope to do my thing, so I have to give them credit for that. They weren’t like, ‘Hey! Sound like this.’ I just followed what I thought Stone Temple Pilots should be.”
Kretz added that with the new album, it’s “…going to change into a whole new kind of way of touring next year for us as well to kind of promote it. So, it’s all going to be different, and I’m really excited.” When pressed on how touring would change around this new album, however, Kretz didn’t offer up any details and said fans will just have to wait and see.
STP finish their current batch of U.S. tour dates on October 12 with a set at the Aftershock Festival in Sacramento, Calif. After performing at the Festival Sin Fronteras in Moyotepec De Juarez, Mexico on October 26, the band’s next shows will find them touring Australia starting April 3.
