Colorado Will Move an Entire Highway Because It’s Cheaper Than Moving a Boulder
BEICHUAN, CHINA - MAY 26: (CHINA OUT) A truck runs past a giant boulder caused by the earthquake at Leigu Township on May 26, 2008 in Beichuan County of Sichuan Province, China. More than 65,000 people are now known to have died in the quake and Chinese aid workers are struggling to find shelter for millions who lost their homes; Premier Wen Jiabao has mentioned reportedly the final death toll could be more than 80,000, and more than 23,000 people are still missing. There is continuing concern over the state in the region; China's Water Ministry reported 69 dams were in danger of bursting. (Photo by China Photos/Getty Images)
A giant boulder fell on a highway in Colorado a few weeks ago. And instead of moving the rock, they figured out it’d be cheaper to just MOVE the highway . . . and route it around the boulder.
The boulder weighs 8.5 million pounds and dug an 8-foot ditch into the Colorado highway. Rerouting the highway will save the state about $200,000.
