Could Planet of the Apes become a reality?
Researchers in China took human copies of the MCPH1 gene, which plays an important role in human brain development, and introduced it into monkey embryos.
Of the 11 monkeys they generated, six died.
The five survivors went through testing, including MRI brain scans and memory tests.
Researchers found the monkeys performed better on short-term memory tests and their brains developed over a longer period of time, then monkeys not infected with the gene.
Scientists have described the study as “the first attempt to experimentally interrogate the genetic basis of human brain origin using a transgenic monkey model.”
