Seal Slaps Kayaker with Octopus

The seal pups being released at dawn this morning were all originally rescued as pups from the coastline after getting into trouble, before being transfered to the Cornwall based National Seal Sanctuary in Gweek for attention. The charity founded in 1958, employs an animal care team, on call 24hrs a day, to rescue the seal pups and to oversee their care in a purpose built hospital, where they receive treatment before being transferred to outdoor pools, where they gain weight and stamina, until they can be released into the wild. On average the sanctuary rescues up to 50 pups a year but aims to rehabilitate all of them back to the coast. Since 1981 only two seals have been diagnosed as never being able to survive in the wild and they have now joined the full time residents at the sanctuary. (Photo by Matt Cardy/Getty Images)
