Here’s Why You Shouldn’t Throw Your Eggshells Away
Firstly, we realize the headline of this article may sound a bit peculiar, but allow us to explain the reasoning behind why people are eating eggshells.
Many people throw away their eggshells after cracking open an egg, but the shells are actually edible. When consumed, they are extremely beneficial to your health.
According to Business Insider, over 150 thousand tons of shell waste is produced by the food industry alone. This is an unnecessary amount of waste, especially considering you can eat eggshells.
Eggshells are a great source of calcium. But wait, before you bite into your next eggshell, there are a few steps involved before you chow down! For starters, you should never bite into a raw shell, rather you should wash the shells and bake them at 200 degrees for 10 to 15 minutes. Once cooked, you should grind the shells into a powder which can then be added to things like cookie or pizza dough, a smoothie, or other popular food items.
Lastly, it’s worth noting, while eating eggshells is a great way to get your daily dose of calcium, digesting too much calcium can be a bad thing. Therefore, adults should only consume one gram of calcium per day.
